Cappfinity Assessments in 2026/27: Format, Timing, and Which UK Employers Use Them

We keep this guide up to date, but employers can change their tests without notice, so always check your own invitation for the final details.

Short answer. Employers describe behavioural or situational questions alongside reasoning tests, such as numerical reasoning. Cappfinity records how long you take, and Deloitte says some of its questions are timed. Of the 312 UK employers in our 2026/27 research, 11 name Cappfinity or are reported to use it on at least one route; the National Audit Office and M&G name Cappfinity, or its product, in their own material. Barclays and PwC are reported to use SHL, EY confirms SHL, and KPMG publishes no provider.

What C, R and NP mean

What does a Cappfinity assessment look like?

Employers describe their Cappfinity steps differently:

  • Deloitte: workplace scenarios where you rank possible actions, working-style questions, then numerical and verbal reasoning (Deloitte).
  • National Audit Office: its Capptivate assessment of behaviours, strengths and potential, paired with an online numerical reasoning test (NAO).
  • M&G: motivational and behavioural questions, plus tasks for critical reasoning and problem-solving (M&G).
  • Legal & General: strength-based behavioural questions and numerical questions (Legal & General).
  • FCA: what it calls an online strengths-based assessment (FCA).

Cappfinity publishes no question counts and no durations. Preparation-site walkthroughs report these rules:

Is a Cappfinity assessment timed?

Cappfinity records how long you take, and some questions can be timed. A candidate walkthrough of Deloitte’s test quotes the on-screen instruction that the test is “time recorded, not time limited” (AssessmentPass) Reported one source. The same instruction says your time counts towards your score. How much it counts is not published Not published.

Employers set their own rules, and they differ:

Deloitte adds that your response speed counts. M&G says its video answers are timed.

HSBC’s two statements do not fully agree: about 40 minutes for each assessment, and “not timed”. In our view, the safe reading is that no clock stops you. HSBC does not say whether it records your pace. We suggest treating the employer’s suggested time as a working budget.

HSBC does not name its test provider either. Prep sites name Cappfinity Reported one source and report 38 questions (2026); HSBC publishes no count. For HSBC’s own timing, see the table above.

Accenture calls its Discovery Portal “an online assessment bespoke to Accenture” and names no supplier (Accenture). One prep site names Cappfinity Reported one source.

Do Barclays, EY, PwC and KPMG use Cappfinity?

Not on our 2026/27 evidence, with one caveat for Barclays. One 2026 prep page (GraduatesFirst, 10 July 2026) says Barclays tests are “typically delivered via SHL or Cappfinity”. The rest of our evidence points to SHL. Older guides, including an earlier version of this page, linked some of these firms to Cappfinity. The current picture:

  • Barclays is reported to use SHL. Barclays’ own page describes two short interactive assessments and names no provider (Barclays).
  • EY uses SHL. EY’s own data notice names SHL as the platform for its early-careers online assessments (EY).
  • PwC is reported to use SHL. PwC’s page also points candidates to SHL practice tests, though a practice link alone does not prove the provider.
  • KPMG publishes no provider for any online step, and prep sites disagree. KPMG’s own pages describe an untimed simulation for its insight programmes, with 90 minutes suggested (KPMG insight). For graduates, they describe a timed 36-minute test of numerical and logical reasoning (KPMG graduate).
  • RSM UK was reported as a Cappfinity user in 2025. No provider is published for the current cycle.

For the other publishers side by side, see the test provider comparison and the SHL guide.

How do you prepare for a Cappfinity assessment?

Reasoning questions. In our view, this is the part you can practise directly: percentages, ratios, reading charts and tables, and checking a statement against a passage. Calculators are reported to be allowed, so practise with one.

Our free test. The free Cappfinity practice test is Cappfinity Numerical Reasoning · Form 2: 12 of our own questions in the style of Cappfinity’s numerical test, in one sitting. Time is recorded, not limited. A physical calculator is allowed for the numerical section.

Situational questions. How Cappfinity scores situational and behavioural answers is not published Not published. We suggest reading the employer’s published values first, then answering as you would act at work, consistently.

On the day. We suggest one sitting in a quiet room, on a laptop, with a calculator, pen and paper to hand. Your pace is recorded, so work steadily rather than stopping mid-section.

To check your level across numerical, verbal and logical reasoning first, the free Acumen Logic Benchmark is 20 questions in 17 minutes, timed by section, with an estimated percentile at the end.
