Investment Bank Online Tests 2026/27, Bank by Bank

We keep this guide up to date, but employers can change their tests without notice, so always check your own invitation for the final details.

Short answer. We checked 43 investment banks for 2026/27. Of these, 18 have a named provider for their online test, and only 6 name it themselves. Aon (cut-e) and SHL are named at more banks than any other provider, and HireVue runs the video interview at 14 banks.

Bank tests differ more than many applicants expect. Lazard says its aptitude test lasts 15 minutes and bans calculators. Aon says wrong answers usually lose points. J.P. Morgan sends a maths test through HireVue, the same platform as its video interview. So the first job is to find out which test your bank sends, for your programme. This guide sets out what each bank publishes, what others report, and where the sources disagree.

What C, R and NP mean

How do you find out which test your bank sends?

Read the bank’s own careers pages. A few name their provider. Nomura’s applications FAQ says: “Our testing provider is AON”. Six of the banks below do this.

Prep sites come last. For many banks they are the only source, and they do not always agree.

One bank can send different tests. Providers can differ between programmes at the same bank. Deutsche Bank is reported as Cappfinity for its Spring into Banking insight week, but sources conflict on its graduate route. J.P. Morgan names HireVue’s maths test for its Markets internships, and names no online test for many other routes.

For Morgan Stanley and UBS, a few prep sites name SHL instead of Aon. The other 22 banks we checked are listed further down.

For the online test, 18 of the 43 banks have a named provider. Of these, 6 are confirmed by the bank and 12 are reported, each on one source. Four of the reported ones are contested: Bank of America, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs. Of the other 25 banks, 24 have no reliable source naming the online-test provider. One of them, Evercore, was previously reported as Neurosight, but we found no current source. Another is Santander CIB. One source reports Clevry for Santander UK’s early-careers schemes, but it does not name CIB. For Berenberg, none of the pages we found describes an online test.

Last checked: October 2026. We re-check every record by 1 July 2027. The method behind the marks is on how we check which test an employer uses.

Nomura names Aon for its internships and graduate programmes, not for its spring insight programmes. It says the online assessments are for EMEA and Asia (excluding Japan) candidates.

J.P. Morgan is a special case. Its Markets job listings ask for “a video interview and (2) a math test, powered by HireVue”. For its Markets internships, that maths test is the only online test J.P. Morgan names. Separately, it names a HackerRank coding test for software engineering, quantitative research and its Engineer & Innovate spring week. Prep sites report SHL for its spring weeks and graduate programmes in general (one source), but J.P. Morgan does not say so.

Lazard and Standard Chartered describe their tests in some detail. Lazard’s UK page describes an aptitude test, a behavioural test and a video assessment, all run by Criteria. Standard Chartered’s FAQ says its Skills Insight Assessment is provided by SHL, and that only the reasoning part is timed. Their own timings are in the timing table.

Where do sources conflict?

For these banks, the sources name different providers, or disagree on whether there is a test at all.

Citi: prep sites name SHL and Plum; Citi names neither.

Goldman Sachs. One prep publisher reports an SHL test for the business divisions, and another reports SHL for the verbal test only. A third prep site says the business tracks have no separate psychometric test (August 2026). Goldman publishes neither. For engineering roles, HackerRank is reported (one source). We found no report of it for the business divisions.

Deutsche Bank. Some prep sites describe an SHL battery for its internships and graduate programme. One says “as of 2026 it has switched to Cappfinity”. Deutsche Bank’s own pages describe the tests but name no provider.

Bank of America and BNP Paribas. Prep sites name Kenexa or SHL for Bank of America’s main routes. For BNP Paribas, sources conflict on the situational judgement test for the Global Banking and Global Markets internship. For its ability tests, including on the Technology internship, Aon is reported (one source). Neither bank names its provider.

Reported providers, and what may have changed

For these banks, one prep site or candidate source names the provider. The bank itself does not.

  • SHL: Barclays, Jefferies and Perella Weinberg Partners (one source each).
  • Aon (cut-e): Morgan Stanley, RBC Capital Markets, UBS and BNP Paribas’ ability tests (one source each).
  • Cappfinity: HSBC (one source).
  • Korn Ferry (Talent Q): Macquarie (one source).

What may have changed this cycle:

  • UBS: prep sites disagree. Pages with a full 2026 date report Aon; others name SHL.
  • Morgan Stanley: four prep sites name Aon, two say “SHL or Aon” and one says SHL. Part of the Aon evidence dates from 2021.
  • Evercore: previously reported as Neurosight, with no current source.
  • Standard Chartered: older pages described Pymetrics games; its current pages name SHL.
  • Barclays: one prep site says Cappfinity was used before for some retail roles. A 2026 prep page says “SHL or Cappfinity”. Three others name SHL alone, so SHL is what we report.

The Cappfinity guide covers who is reported to use Cappfinity now.

Video interviews and coding tests

HireVue runs the video interview at 14 of the 15 banks where a video platform is named. J.P. Morgan confirms it in its job listings. The other 13 are reported: Bank of America, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Evercore, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Jefferies, Morgan Stanley, RBC Capital Markets, SMBC and UBS. Goldman Sachs’ HireVue step is reported by several independent sources. Across all 312 employers we checked, it is the only reported answer that rests on more than one source. The other bank is Lazard, which names Criteria for its video assessment.

For 10 banks we recorded a video step but no named platform. For 18 we recorded no video step at all. We have no HireVue or video interview practice yet.

Coding tests for technology roles. J.P. Morgan’s job listings name HackerRank for its software engineering and quantitative research routes. HackerRank is also reported (one source each) for engineering or technology roles at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and BNP Paribas. At UBS it is reported for the summer internship and graduate programme, with no role split we can confirm. Standard Chartered names SHL for its coding simulation, for tech roles. We do not offer HackerRank practice.

Do spring insight programmes have online tests?

Some do, but few banks say which provider runs them. The table shows each spring programme where our research names a provider for an online test or video step, plus Goldman Sachs, whose spring video step was reported as HireVue in 2022.

J.P. Morgan’s SHL and HireVue spring rows come from prep sites that name no specific 2027 programme. HSBC’s row rests on prep sites describing its general process; HSBC had not listed a 2027 spring programme when we checked.

Spring programmes with no named provider. We also checked spring programmes at Bank of America, Barclays (Discovery Programme), BNP Paribas, Evercore, Houlihan Lokey, Jefferies, Nomura, Rothschild & Co, Standard Chartered and Wells Fargo Securities. None has a named provider for its spring online test. Nomura and Standard Chartered name a provider for their internships, but not for spring insight.

HSBC’s two pages disagree. Moelis does not call its 30 minutes a time limit. Nomura’s Europe page counts the 5 days from your application instead.

Which banks name no provider?

For these 22 banks we found no reliable source naming the provider of the online test or the video interview: Alantra, Arma Partners, Berenberg, Cavendish Capital Markets, Credit Agricole CIB, Fenchurch Advisory, Guggenheim Securities, Houlihan Lokey, ING, Investec, Lincoln International, Mizuho (incl. Greenhill), MUFG, Panmure Liberum, Peel Hunt, Rothschild & Co, Santander CIB, Scotiabank, Societe Generale, Stifel Europe, Wells Fargo Securities and William Blair.

Some of these banks describe their tests on their own sites. MUFG says its assessments are timed; Rothschild & Co says its online assessment is not. None of them names the provider.

Practise the right format

We build replica tests for three providers: SHL, Aon (cut-e) and Cappfinity. If your bank is named or reported for one of these, the matching free test is a sensible start. Each free test covers one subject only.

  • SHL (Standard Chartered confirmed; Barclays, Jefferies and Perella Weinberg Partners reported): the free SHL practice test is numerical, multiple choice, 18 questions in 25 minutes (our time limit, not a reported SHL figure).
  • Aon (cut-e) (Nomura confirmed; Morgan Stanley, RBC Capital Markets, UBS and BNP Paribas’ ability tests reported): the free Aon practice test is scales verbal, 49 tasks in 12 minutes. Aon says its real tests usually deduct marks for wrong answers; our replicas mark each answer right or wrong, with no deduction.
  • Cappfinity (HSBC reported; Deutsche Bank’s spring week reported): the free Cappfinity practice test is numerical, 12 questions, with no countdown and your time recorded.

We offer no practice for HireVue, Criteria, Suited, Korn Ferry (Talent Q) or HackerRank. More on each format: SHL tests in 2026, the Aon (cut-e) scales numerical test and Cappfinity assessments. For accountancy firms, see Big Four online tests 2026/27; for every sector, the UK graduate aptitude tests guide.

Each test is free, needs no card and can be taken once. You start without an account and sign up at the end to see your score and every correct answer. These are our replicas in each publisher's format, not the publishers' own tests: the question counts and timings are our settings.

No invitation yet? The free Benchmark covers numerical, verbal and logical reasoning in 20 questions and 17 minutes, and shows your weakest section. How your score compares with others is explained in aptitude test percentiles explained, and when to start in when to start preparing.

Common questions

Which online test do investment banks use in 2026/27?
Of the 43 investment banks we checked, 18 have a named provider for their online test, and only 6 name it themselves: Standard Chartered (SHL), Nomura (Aon), Lazard (Criteria), Moelis & Company and PJT Partners (Suited), and J.P. Morgan (a HireVue maths test on its Markets internships). The other 12 rely on prep-site reports, one source each, and sources conflict at four of them. For 24 banks no reliable source names the provider, and for Berenberg we found no online test. Santander CIB is one of the 24: one source reports Clevry for Santander UK's early-careers schemes, but it does not name CIB.
Does Goldman Sachs use an SHL test?
Sources conflict. Prep sites report an SHL test for Goldman Sachs' business divisions, while another prep site says the business tracks have no separate psychometric test. Goldman does not name a provider. For engineering roles, HackerRank is reported (one source), and the video interview is reported as HireVue by several sources.
Which investment banks use HireVue?
HireVue runs the video interview at 14 of the 15 banks where a video platform is named. J.P. Morgan names HireVue in its job listings. Bank of America, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Evercore, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Jefferies, Morgan Stanley, RBC Capital Markets, SMBC and UBS are reported. Lazard names Criteria for its video assessment.
Do spring insight programmes have online tests?
Some do, but few banks name the provider. Lazard names Criteria for its Spring Insight Programme 2027, and J.P. Morgan names HackerRank for its Engineer & Innovate spring programme. Deutsche Bank is reported as Cappfinity for its spring week, and Morgan Stanley and UBS as Aon, one source each. HSBC is reported as Cappfinity too, but only by prep sites describing its general process. Nomura and Standard Chartered name a provider for their internships, but not for spring insight.
Is there free practice for investment bank tests?
Yes, for three providers. Our free SHL test is numerical, multiple choice; our free Aon test is scales verbal; our free Cappfinity test is numerical. Each is one sitting and covers one subject. Match it to the provider your bank is named or reported for. We offer no practice for HireVue, Criteria, Suited, Korn Ferry (Talent Q) or HackerRank.
